Upcoming Fashion Show!

Hello everyone! Some of my subscribers might remember that I was planning to try out for a fashion show recently. I’m so excited to announce that I will be one of the designers for RVA Fashion Week this season! I had a great time at the audition, and it would have been a fun experience even if I hadn’t been accepted. So getting into the show was the icing on the cake.

I talked my sister Nichole into coming with me. Her job was to wear a peacock dress and somehow not look crazy. I think she did a pretty good job, right up until we had to stop at the grocery store afterwards, when she ended up looking like a confused refugee from the 1800s who had never seen packaged yogurt before.

The peacock dress was a design that the two of us had collaborated on. Nichole dreamed it up, and we each worked on it according to the free time we had available, and our areas of expertise.

I was wearing my DIY dress that I made from 2 circles of fabric. (Check out the tutorial if you’d like to make your own!) We stopped to take pictures in front of this scrap metal car sculpture that I love so very much.

If you’re on my email list, you’ve gotten a tiny sneak peek at what I’m working on for the upcoming fashion show. It’s called the Flights of Fancy collection, and each look is inspired by something that flies. Some of my inspiration came from real flying creatures, such as butterflies and birds, and some came from mythical beings, such as the Phoenix dress that I mentioned in my previous newsletter. (If you’re not a subscriber and you’d like to receive my email newsletters, you can enter your email address below.)

The Flights of Fancy collection, like many of my designs, will be a celebration of all things upcycled. I’ve been cutting up vinyl placemats, old clothing, and even scrounged electrical wire for some of the designs, and I plan to use unconventional elements like computer-assisted drafting, fire, a soldering iron, some old chandelier parts, LED lights, wooden dowels, and maybe even a weedwhacker to achieve some of the looks I’m going for. I’m also planning to incorporate a lot of natural materials such as feathers, vines, and leaves. Here’s the sketch I drew of The Phoenix:

I don’t want to give away too much before the show, but I will try to take pictures of the process as I go, so that I can share my methods and madness with all of you after my collection is finished.

I’m very excited and having lots of fun, but of course this means that I have been super busy drafting patterns, cutting, sewing, weaving, and embellishing, so I haven’t been able to post as many tutorials as I normally do. I barely have time to sleep right now! But I promise to post a tutorial soon that highlights an item that I made for the upcoming show.

I’m excited to meet the models next week. I will give updates when I can, in between rounds of coffee, but right now I’m going to get back to my Griffin dress. I wish you all the very best Autumn!

  1. June Hodgins (Lollita Faith) – I am a suicide attempt survivor. Through all the deep dark valleys I walked, suddenly I discovered a light at the end of the tunnel shining so bright, greater than I had ever seen before. How was it possible for a woman such as I, to have come so far in life, with nothing but loneliness and despair, then suddenly I'm rescued? Could it be possible it was for such a time as this? There are too many people today that are ending their life needlessly. I am now an advocate for suicide prevention. My passion and prayer has become my mission to share my journey to make a difference in someone’s life and I believe it is possible!
